MiG-31 fighter jet crashes, investigation is underway
A MiG-31 fighter jet crashed near Karagandy. The Kazakh Defense Ministry began investigating the accident, appointing a special commission, its press service reported. Commander-in-Chief of Kazakhstan’s Air Forces and Commander of Air Defense arrived at the scene.
The military plane crashed during a scheduled flight training for combat duty. One of the engines caught fire after takeoff. Pilots directed the aircraft away from the residential area and ejected. They were taken to a local hospital. One of them is in a stable condition, while the other in a moderate.
According to the press service, both pilots are experienced Lieutenant Colonels with the total flight time of 1,161 and 888 hours.
The aircraft itself was launched in 1991. This was the fourth time of the MiG-31 flight jet crash in Kazakhstan after accidents in 2007, 2008 and 2013.
