Football Players’ Value Falls by 9.22 Billion Euros Due to Coronavirus

Coronavirus pandemic affected not only international sports competitions, but also famous sportsmen. The price of the famous football players dropped by 20 percent, amounting to a total of 9.22 billion euros (a little over US$10 billion), Transfermarkt website reported. Those footballers born in 1998 or after would suffer a loss of only 10 percent.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) center forward Kyllian Mbappe suffered a drop of 20 million euros (US$21.7 million) and still remains the most valuable player with a price of 180 million euros (US$195.6 million). The value of Manchester City winger and attacking midfielder Raheem Sterling dropped to 128 million euros (US$139 million) as well as PSG forward Neymar’s. Both of them share second and third place in the most valuable players list. The price of Barcelona captain Lionel Messi fell from 140 to 112 million euros (from US$152.2 million to US$121.7 million), losing more than 25 million (US$27 million). Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo lost 15 million euros (US$16.3 million), which demoted him to the 46th place in the list.

Many football clubs reduce the salaries of football players and coaches in order to pay the full amount to other employees amid a pause in the national championships. For example, Real Madrid reduced its players’ salaries by 10 to 20 percent.
