Government Introduces New Social Support Amidst Crisis
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made a televised address where he announced a number of effective measure of social assistance amidst the crises caused by coronavirus pandemic. The government made a decision to increase the pensions and social welfare payments 10 percent. President Tokayev expanded the list of applicants for additional social payments. Self-employed and those who lost their jobs will receive 42,500 tenge during the state of emergency. In the next three months, medical assistance will be provided to everyone regardless of the status in the compulsory social health insurance system.
“It is necessary to expand the list of categories of citizens who should be provided with free food packages. Disabled persons of 1, 2, 3 categories, disabled children and the officially unemployed should receive such packages. The measure will concern more than 800,000 people. In the future, we should switch from the food packages to transfer of funds so that people are able to choose and buy the products themselves,” President Tokayev said.
Tax preferences are provided to support small and medium-sized businesses. The most affected sectors of the economy such as catering, trade, transport and consulting services, IT, hotel business and tourism are exempted from social tax for the next six months. Small and medium-sized businesses will be allowed a three-month delay in paying other types of taxes.
