Tokyo Olympics Postponed until 2021
The International Olympic Committee announced it would delay the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the IOC´s press office reported.
The Tokyo Olympic Games were to be held July 24 - August 9 and the Paralympic Games had been scheduled for August 25 - September 6. Japan´s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the IOC President Thomas Bach held telephone discussions before making a decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics until next year.
“In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today [Tuesday], the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but no later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community”, the IOC said in a statement.
The Olympic torch was agreed to stay in Japan. The event will still be called Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021.
This marks the fourth time in history that the Olympic Games are postponed. The three other times the games were cancelled because of the World War I and World War II.
