Kazakhstan is one of the most innovative countries in the world
Kazakhstan is recognized as one of the most innovative countries in the world. Over the years of independence, more than 30,000 patents have been issued to local innovators. Kazakhs develop know-how in all areas. Among the authors of innovations are many young people. Even schoolchildren try their skills in research. A 12-grade student at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Kyzylorda, Altynai Abdizhamil has become an author of a scientific discovery that contributes to the decline of incidents of infectious diseases. Her studies on properties of phytoncides of wild plants in the Aral Sea region have helped to compile a list of natural antibiotics. The plants include harmala, Ela-eagnus oxy-car-pa, tamarisk and Euphrates poplar. Altynai offers to plant settlements to prevent viral diseases.
ALTYNAI ABDIZHAMIL, STUDENT, NAZARBAYEV INTELLECTUAL SCHOOL:
- We should increase the number of these plants in order to prevent infectious diseases, especially in areas of schools and childcare centers. There is an idea of creating an artificial green belt around the city. Wild plants are very beneficial from the economic view point because they do not require a special watering system and care.
DARIGA MUNARBAYEVA, BIOLOGY TEACHER:
- Our results are very surprising. Harmala has strong phytoncide properties. These phytoncides are also active against suppression of vital activity of acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory illnesses, and flu and so on. I think that research on phytoncides’ activities of many plants will allow our scientists to use them for medical purposes.
Miras Baimyrza is a graduate of Nazarbayev University. He is also one of the founders of a new test platform, which automatically sorts questions and determines the quality of the test. There are practice tests on the website for those who want to enroll to the Nazarbayev Intellectual School.
MIRAS BAIMYRZA, WEBSITE DEVELOPER:
- A person who is undertaking a test not only passes the test and gets his or her final score, but he or she receives feedback. We give him or her full analysis on which sections of a particular subject he or she is good at or needs to improve.
Today, more than 1000 people have visited the website to undertake the tests. Currently, only admission tests to the Nazarbayev Intellectual School are available online. In the future, applicants can try the practice the United National Test on the same platform.
