Turkistan is set to become the spiritual and cultural center of the Turkic world. In addition, the city will turn into the center of tourism of the Central Asian region. Turkistan with its unique architecture is as attractive to travelers as the ancient cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. Tourists from neighboring countries and beyond seek to visit Turkistan, which used to be the capital of the Kazakh Khanate for about three centuries. According to experts, the new status of the regional center would have a beneficial effect on the development of the whole region.
SULTAN KARTOYEV, HEAD OF CHECHEN-INGUSH CENTER:
- It will allow for a more effective attraction of foreign tourists to travel across our country and learn the history and geography of Kazakhstan. The fact the region is called ‘Turkistan’ highlights the tribute to this city.
The local government developed the ‘Ancient Turkistan’ concept aimed at the development of the city as a worldwide historical and cultural center. According to scientists, development of the tourism industry is one of the most important parts of the concept.
KHANGELDY ABZHANOV, PROFESSOR:
- A visit by each tourist provides seven residents of Turkistan with jobs. They need the services of a driver to drive them around, a chef that will cook for them and a hotel to provide accommodation. If one million tourists visit Turkistan annually, it will provide seven million people with jobs.
Turkistan will become a modern and digital center of Southern Kazakhstan to attract more tourists. However, the city’s architectural design will be maintained in the medieval style. None of the new buildings will be higher than the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. The historical facility should be visible from all sides. In order to increase the flow of tourists, the local Government is planning to construct the Yasawi museum for the storage of the manuscripts of the great scientist. They are also planning to build the international airport, railway and bus stations, hotels and cafes.
