Kazakhstan’s prospects in renewable energy sources

Development of renewable energy sector is one of the priority areas in the establishment of future economy in Kazakhstan. The prospects of its development in Kazakhstan were discussed at a summit in Astana recently. The forum was attended by 500 delegates and experts from all over the world. The renewable energy sources concept was one of the most important points of discussion. The declaration on the development of renewable energy sources, adopted as a result of the summit, will become an important step to attract the international best practices to Kazakhstan.

Projects on the renewable energy sources will play a significant role in the successful establishment of the future economy. Part of the project was selected at the first auction held at the electronic trading platform of Kazakhstan Electricity and Power Market Operator. The auction process was used to allow transparency in choosing the winners. Investors were offered all types of renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and hydro power stations. Kazakh Minister of Energy Kanat Bozumbayev briefed the journalists on the results of the auctions.


- The Kazakh Government plans to implement a number of renewable energy projects. Four solar power stations with the total capacity of 68 megawatt and the total investments of 23 billion Tenge will be implemented in Almaty and Kyzylorda regions within two years. 10 wind and one biogas power stations with the total capacity of 106 megawatt and the total investments of 36 billion Tenge will be implemented within three years.

The auctions held have allowed for the reduction of energy tariff levels that was approved in Kazakhstan in 2013. The next auction session is planned for October this year.
