Hydropower development

The use of renewable energy sources is a priority task for Kazakhstan’s sustainable development. As a part of its implementation, hydro power plants are constructed in Kazakhstan’s regions. One of them is built on the Lepsy River in Almaty. It is a dam-type hydro power plant with the capacity of 17 megawatt. The annual gross power generation totals about 68 million kilowatt per hour. It is the second hydro power plant constructed on the river. Over four billion tenge of private investments were spent on its construction. Electricity will be generated at the minimum water flow rate. The expansion of the network of hydro power plants will help to reduce the power deficit in the region and will contribute to the expansion of irrigated land area.       


- Our plant operates based on water pressure on the turbines released from the reservoir. The plant is equipped with three large turbines with the capacity of 4,850 kilowatt and one small turbine with the capacity of 2.5 megawatt.

The mountain river Baskan also has great potential in terms of the small-scale power generation. Local officials are planning to construct six small hydro power plants here. The construction for one power plant with the capacity of 4.2 megawatt per hour has begun. The diversion-type power plant has three turbines, each with a capacity of 1.4 megawatt. Meanwhile, the river allows for the construction of a whole range of hydro power plants with the gross capacity of 50 megawatt. The government officials plan to construct a reservoir with the capacity of 80 million cubic meters of water. 


- The Pokatilov reservoir project is ready, and undergoes state evaluation. The reservoir will allow expanding the irrigated lands of the Sarkan and Aksu districts. The irrigated lands in the Aksu district will grow by 8,400 hectares and in Sarkan district by 11,300, with the total of 32,000 hectares of irrigated land.

65 per cent of the hydropower mountain rivers resources in Kazakhstan are focused in Almaty region. Today, the alternative energy development program is developed here. According to the program, 28 facilities will be constructed in the region by 2025 that will additionally produce over 850 megawatt of electricity.
