Nearly 11,000 Kazakh citizens to participate in Nur Otan party primaries

According to the results of the first round of the primaries, 10,990 people were registered from 17 to 18 August. First Deputy Chairperson of the territorial branch ‘Birlik’ of the Nur Otan Party’s capital branch Chingiz Kozhakhmetov told this to the Kazakh TV correspondent.

“The concept of primaries is common in many countries. Simply put, this is a selection of the most active citizens who want to try themselves out and who have a positive reputation among the people. The intra-party selection took place in previous years, in past elections, but only in pilot mode. This year it is held among all party members at the country-wide level,” Kozhakhmetov said.

He also said that nearly 11,000 candidates will participate in the primary election. Of these, 37 percent are women, 20 to 30 percent are young people under 35 years old and 7,900 people are self-nominated candidates. Kozhakhmetov noted a significant increase in the number of people willing to join the ranks of the Nur Otan Party.

“First of all, this is the selection of citizens who can speak on behalf of the people, who can work with people and raise the most pressing issues, and also act. It should also be noted that the number of new party members has increased since the beginning of the primaries,” Kozhakhmetov said.

The highest competition is observed in the Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan. There are 18 candidates for one seat. The number of applicants stands at 403.

“Overall, registered candidates for the primaries will be selected both to the Mazhilis and maslikhats, also known as the local representative bodies. There is a rating system. Those who get the most votes will be taken to the Mazhilis, others to maslikhats,” Kozhakhmetov said.

Kazakhstan is currently holding the third round of primaries, that is, public debates. Three groups of 10 people will take part in them every day. The debate will last two weeks.
