EXPERTS’ VIEWS ON KAZAKHSTAN’S TERM IN UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL
Kazakhstan’s contribution to the peacekeeping activities and active position in resolution of many global challenges were commended by the leaders of international non-governmental organizations (NGO). The NGO working group on the United Nations Security Council discussed Kazakhstan’s activities in the important United Nations body. The working group brings together 37 NGOs. The working group’s chairman and Amnesty International’s representative in the United Nations, Renzo Pomi highlighted that during the membership in the UN Security Council, Kazakhstan proved to be an active advocate for peace and development and made significant efforts to implement important initiatives.
RENZO POMI, CHAIRMAN, NGO WORKING GROUP ON SECURITY COUNCIL
-The fact that Kazakhstan is leaving the Security Council doesn’t mean that the role of Kazakhstan ends on UN matters but in particular not on peace and security issues because I believe, this is my personal view, that Kazakhstan has been very active on perhaps beyond what can be expected of a regular elected member in terms of others in conflict situations in the area, in the region, but also in general has been an active member of the Security Council. And normally, exiting members remain engaged on the issues they have been working as part of the Security Council. And I expect Kazakhstan to do the same.
American professor Leonid Goldin also emphasized Kazakhstan’s peacekeeping activities which were recognized by the international community. The professor closely followed the Astana Process aimed at the settlement of the conflict in Syria and other meetings and negotiations held in Astana. According to Goldin, Kazakhstan set the example of achieving ambitious goals.
LEONID GOLDIN, AMERICAN PROFESSOR, JOURNALIST
-Kazakhstan’s role as a peacekeeper is phenomenal. I was especially impressed by the way the Arabs and Jews communicated in Astana. I don’t think that they can talk this way in Israel and Palestine. Kazakhstan’s role in conflict prevention is known in the world as the country helps prevent conflicts involving nuclear weapons. It is impossible to change people’s minds with speeches, but we know that there is a discussion platform in Kazakhstan which provides an opportunity to have a different perspective and change many things.
