Supporting Innovations in Kazakhstan

There is a growing number of people willing to be funded by grants for innovative projects in Kazakhstan. According to the National Agency for Technological Development, the submission of application was extended till September 3 on numerous requests. At the moment, there are more than 60 registered applications. 36.5 per cent of applications were submitted in Almaty, the highest the number of submissions, followed by Astana with 19 per cent and Pavlodar region being the third in the list of submissions. The majority of the grant applications are for technology commercialization, followed by technological development of enterprises and industries.


 - The program is operational since 2011. The total amount of grants allocated since then exceeded 12 billion tenge. We provided support funding to more than 300 projects that created over 3,000 permanent jobs as part of the multiplier effect. According to our estimates, the amount of taxes paid to both republican and local budgets exceeded the amount of funds provided to support the projects.

Meanwhile, development of technological entrepreneurship is gaining momentum in Kazakhstan. Recently, a specialized master class was held in Astana. The participants gained knowledge on the development of start-ups, from idea to successful business. The leading international experts served as mentors at the training. According to them, the modern entrepreneurs should focus on innovative solutions. The attendees also learned about the effective marketing strategies and the ways of attracting foreign investments.


 - I think that technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality, blockchain and Internet are the basic technologies that fully change operations in many fields, from restaurants to healthcare. First, we need to understand all opportunities that the new technologies offer. Second, we need to understand, how these technologies can be applied in Kazakhstan and beyond.

According to foreign specialists, the startup movement in Kazakhstan is actively developing. There are many interesting ideas. Implementation of digital technologies and resources available to young entrepreneurs will help them develop at a faster pace and take their businesses to a new level.
