500 kilometers of toll roads will appear in Kazakhstan within half a year. The list includes such highways as Astana - Temirtau, Almaty - Kapshagai and Almaty - Khorgos. This was announced during the republican meeting on the development of the transport and logistics industry. 4,200 kilometers of roads will be repaired in 2018. 23 projects across all regions of the republic will be implemented as part of the Nurly Zher program. About 150 billion tenge will be allocated for the reconstruction of local roads, the Transport Committee says. Half of the funds will be allocated by regional Governor’s Offices, and the rest - from the republican budget.
MEREKE PSHEMBAYEV, CHAIRMAN, ROADS COMMITTEE, KAZAKH MINISTRY FOR INVESTMENT AND DEVELOPMENT:
- We are planning to introduce fees for 6,500 kilometers of roads by 2020 in order to use budgetary funds effectively. We will be allocating about 30 billion tenge annually for their maintenance. In general, thanks to the work carried out at present, we are planning to keep 90% of national roads in good condition by 2020.
The flow of goods will be increased as the roads are repaired. In 2020, it is planned to bring annual revenues from the transit of goods to $5 billion. According to experts, China-Europe-China will become the main driver in the increase of cargo transportation. Last year, this route provided a double growth; more than 200,000 containers were transported. In 2018, it is planned to increase this figure twofold.
ASKAR MAMIN, FIRST DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER OF KAZAKHSTAN:
- At present, the share of the transport sector in the country's GDP is more than 8%. At the end of 2017, Kazakhstan's economy grew by 4%, while the transport industry became one of the drivers with an indicator of 4.8%. Over the past 10 years, the total amount of investments in the development of the transport industry has amounted to about 30 billion US dollars.
