Kazakhstan’s Tokamak is underway for second stage

The six CIS countries intend to use Kazakhstan’s Tokamak. The states have already signed the appropriate treaty. Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom want to cooperate, too. Now the thermonuclear plant is underway for a second stage of the physical launch. Representatives of National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan in Kurchatov presented the initiatives to launch the unit again. The idea of ​​creating the Tokamak in 1997 was proposed by President, Nursultan Nazarbayev and Russian academician, Yevgeny Velikhov. After 20 years the project proved its viability. Today, the 60 scientists who are directly working with the installation have to find out new horizons in science.


- Within a month, we will move to a new stage which is a second launch of the physical launch. By the end of the year, we are ready to hand this installation over to the state commission in order to conduct research with a number of partners next year.

An experimental thermonuclear reactor has been constructed for 10 years in the Karadash center for research, in France. The cost of the facility is estimated at 19 billion euros. The countries of the European Union, the U.S., Japan, Russia, India, Korea and Kazakhstan participate in the implementation of the international project.


- The approximate temperature at the center of the sun is 20 million degrees while the Tokamak’s temperature can be several times higher.  Regarding the construction materials, we have to study and choose the most suitable ones for the reactor. We need to choose materials that can overcome huge heat loads which are 20 megawatts per square meter. We must ensure that the reactor will work. It will give a way to create a thermonuclear reactor, solve these problems and show what kind of construction materials we should use for the thermonuclear reactor. This is a very important goal.

The Tokamak’s physical launch will be conducted in 2025.  It will be introduced for exploitation in 2028. According to the results, the implementation of hybrid reactors are considered which uses neutrons of thermonuclear fusion for splitting nuclear fuel.
