"Transition to the Latin script is a timely measure"
Transition to the Latin script is a timely measure. This opinion was expressed by Jack Straw, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, and now an active member of the Labor Party. According to him, this will allow the Kazakh language to integrate into the global communication space more quickly and increase the competitiveness of Kazakhstan as a whole.
JACK STRAW, FORMER UK FOREIGN MINISTER, 2001-2006:
- Personally, I think this is very welcome and when there was the revolution in Turkey and Kemal Ataturk found the nationhood after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. One of the reforms that Kemal Ataturk introduced was to move from the Arabic script to the Latin script. That has been hugely important for the Turks themselves.
Vaclav Klaus, former president of the Czech Republic and the current member of the Advisory Council of the European Council on Foreign Affairs, supports Kazakhstan’s decision to adopt the Latin script. The politician emphasizes that the Latin is better adapted to information technologies, which means it opens up wider opportunities that can speed up the society.
VACLAV KLAUS, FORMER PRESIDENT OF CZECH REPUBLIC:
- The move towards the Latin alphabet is a step forward. I think that Kazakhstan wants to be much more easy going.
