Transition to Latin script
According to domestic experts, the transition to the Latin script is one of the most important stages of the Modernization of Public Consciousness program. In addition, the transition will facilitate the learning process of Kazakh language throughout the world. Linguists highlight that the approved version keeps all the sounds. Philologists highlighted the positive point which is the gradual introduction of the Latin script.
ALMAZHAN KADYRKHANKYZY, RESEARCHER, LANGUAGES DEVELOPMENT CENTRE:
- The transition to the Latin alphabet is an important step forward. The new version of the alphabet is easy to remember, write and use. Most importantly, it preserves the unique sounds of the Kazakh language.
Members of Latvian parliament welcomed Kazakhstan’s decision to switch to the Latin alphabet until 2025. They also support the establishment of a national commission to implement this reform. Latvian parliamentary group member Andrey Klementiev claims that Kazakhstan will successfully cope with the goal.
ANDREY KLEMENTIEV, LATVIAN PARLIAMENTARY GROUP MEMBER:
- The transition takes seven years which is a lot of time. On the other hand, it takes a little time since the reform is very serious. Latvia transitioned to the script and we are aware about issues we came across. Languages are the wealth and the more young people speak in languages, the more they become competitive in today's global space. In any case, the reform should occur without rushing, it should proceed flexibly.
