Kazakh Interior Ministry switches to smartphones for convict tracking
Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs will no longer purchase expensive electronic monitoring bracelets for convicts. Kazakh Interior Minister Yerlan Turgumbayev stated that tracking their location will be possible by just using smartphones.
“Nowadays, IT technologies have gone so far that there is no need for electronic bracelets. Almost everyone has got a smartphone. If we register a smartphone with the internal affairs authorities, we will see the movement of any law offender. We will be able to see his or her location by using the ‘FaceTime’ application,” Turgumbayev said.
Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs intends to significantly expand the use of electronic gadgets in its work. As previously reported, the bill suggesting that Kazakh citizens can drive their cars with only an identity only is currently being considered by the members of the Kazakh Parliament. If approved, already from January 1, 2021, Kazakh citizens will be able to leave at home a whole bunch of documents and carry only an ID with them. Traffic police officers will be able to find out all information about the driver and his vehicle using special electronic tablets.
“In the spring, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to develop a corresponding program. We drew up a program and almost completely tested it at the checkpoints during the nationwide state of emergency,” said Turgumbayev.
Kazakh Minister of Internal Affairs Yerlan Turgumbayev noted that currently the traffic police have nearly 13,000 electronic tablets. Databases of individuals, vehicles, insurance companies, vehicle inspection report, as well as all of the registration documents that are stored in public service centers and ‘Government for Citizens’ web portal, were integrated into the electronic tablets.
