Global COVID-19 death toll exceeds 500,000, Egypt opens tourist season
According to the study led by the University of California, coronavirus produces ‘sinister’ tentacles that attack the human body faster. The researchers believe that these tentacles make holes in other cells and the disease captures the healthy neighboring cells through the obtained ‘tunnel’. In this regard, the scientists behind the study believe that drugs used in oncology are suitable for treating coronavirus.
The current global pandemic still causes great and pressing concern. According to Johns Hopkins University, COVID-19 killed nearly 502,000 people. Most coronavirus-linked deaths are registered in the United States, Brazil and the United Kingdom. There are more than 125,000 deaths registered in the U.S., whereas in Brazil the number exceeded 57,600 and in the UK 43,500.
To date, reported cases of COVID-19 infection worldwide stand at more than 10.2 million. Most of the cases are registered in the United States, followed by Brazil, Russia and India. 5.14 million global coronavirus patients reported to have recovered from the disease.
The United States is the hardest-hit country in the global pandemic in terms of the number of COVID-19 cases. Every day, the country reports 40,000 new cases. According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 2.5 million people were diagnosed with coronavirus in the U.S. since the start of the pandemic. In recent days, new coronavirus cases were reported in 36 states. A tense epidemiological situation is observed in the south and the west of the country. In Florida alone, nearly 9,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in a day. Some experts say that Florida can become a new cluster of the epidemic.
The U.S. chief epidemiologist said that the reasons for the deterioration of the epidemiological situation in the country are due to the relaxation of the restrictive measures. However, Florida governor Ron DeSantis said that the reason lies elsewhere.
“In my opinion, the reason for the increase in the number of coronavirus cases is not only in lifting of quarantine measures, but also the resumption of work of many enterprises. People are working in the same space close to each other for several hours, so the risk of infection increases. Among the people who contracted the COVID-19 are mainly people from 18 to 44 years old. The epidemic is spreading rapidly among young people. Therefore, it is best not to go to public places,” said Gov. DeSantis.
Nearly 20 million coronavirus tests have been already conducted in the neighboring Russia during the current pandemic, reported Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing. Now, some regions of the country are carrying out a large-scale antibody testing.

“This measure has been taken to determine the level of herd immunity,” experts said. The scientists want to identify how much Russian residents developed the immunity for COVID-19. To date, more than 300,000 people are under the supervision of doctors. 7,000 new coronavirus cases were registered in Russia in the last 24 hours. In total, the COVID-19 infected more than 633,000 people and killed 9,000 coronavirus patients.

When will the travel industry recover from a pandemic?
It is a well-known fact that the tourism industry is one of the most important drivers of economic growth. COVID-19 negatively affected the tourism industry in Egypt. Coronavirus monthly robbed the state treasury of billions of dollars of possible revenues. Experts predicted a nationwide bankruptcy, if the pandemic lasted until fall. However, when the numbers showed the first decline in coronavirus cases, Egyptian President instructed to develop a set of measures for the speedy opening of hotels and beaches. In this regard, it is planned that the hotels on the Red Sea coast will start their tourist season from July 1. At the first phase, hotels will be loaded only 70 percent. If after the opening of resorts in the country there will not be new coronavirus outbreaks, the rest of the beaches destinations of Egypt will also be able to open for tourists.
“We don’t exclude the possibility that one of our guests will bring to the country or contract coronavirus. In this case, we developed a number of guidelines. In case of contracting the disease, the tourist will be provided with medication and necessary treatment at the expense of the fund created in Egypt to fight against COVID-19. However, now the situation in the resorts is kept under strict control. The resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Matruh were declared a ‘clear zone’,” said Ali Shairi, senior manager of the hotel chain in Hurghada.
Coronavirus made adjustments to the tourism sector in Spain as well. The epidemic influenced the choice of vacation destinations. The number of tourists who want to spend time and relax in the fresh air, closer to nature, increased. One of the domestic tour operators, taking into account the new demand, opened the resorts on the slopes of Ronda Mountain.

The main requirement in all of the countries is a strict epidemiological control over the safety of tourists.
