Old banknotes get withdrawn
Banknotes of denominations of 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 tenge will no longer be exchanged in any financial institutions. The four-year period of exchange expired, and starting today, banks will not accept notes issued in 2006. Therefore, people in Kazakhstan who did not have time to exchange the old banknotes, do not have the opportunity to do this now.
“Due to the expiration of the withdrawal period, banknotes of denominations of 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 tenge issued in 2006 cannot be accepted and exchanged throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan, including by second-tier banks, the national postal operator and branches of the National Bank,” stated the press office of the National Bank Of Kazakhstan

Meanwhile, the National Bank of Kazakhstan has conducted foreign exchange market intervention for the first time since March this year, said the institution’s press-service. The bank took such a step to mitigate unnecessary market volatility. As a result, interventions volume exceeded US$230 million. The sales were carried out on the exchange market from foreign exchange reserves.
