International Festival of Nomads

Astana has become a center of nomadic culture. The ‘Koshpediler alemi’ international festival of the nomadic culture dedicated to the 20th anniversary of capital took place in Astana. Teams from eight countries arrived to show diversity of the nomadic culture, including the teams from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yakutia and Hungary. The festival program included historical nomadic epics, performances by musicians, demonstrations of hunting breeds of dogs and golden eagles and many other things.

 - Hello, dear Kazakhs, dear brothers and sisters. Congratulations on Astana’s 20th anniversary! Hello to you from Hungary and the entire Hungarian people.

Everyone could immerse in the nomadic culture of the Great Steppe. Representatives from different countries installed yurts where they demonstrated ancient traditions and customs.

The steppe warriors reconstructed ancient battles at the field camps. There were seven hand-made villages where visitors had an opportunity to practice archery, horse-riding and observe craftsmen’s works.

 - The same festival took place in Hungary, which was known all around the world as Kurultai of Huns-Turkic people. Approximately 250,000 people visit the festival every year. We began to organize the festival in the same way. This year, the festival is a huge event, which attracts tourists from all over the world. That’s why the Kazakh Tourism national company signed an agreement with ‘QazaqGeography.’

Historical nomadic epics were introduced to spectators. Legends about magic fairies who saved the Bulgarian batyrs and the history of the capture of the fortress of the Ottoman Empire were told. In addition, there were competitions on ‘Kazak kuresi,’ ‘Arkan Tartu,’ ‘Asyk atu’ and other types of traditional games of nomads.

 - The nomadic world was always close to Kazakh and Kyrgyz people because this is our common ancient history. Both Kazakhs and Kyrgyz shot arrows and hunted for food. We brought the best archers and folk ensembles from Kyrgyzstan to the festival.

 - We are descendants of the ancient nomads who went to Europe by horse riding. The first group was the one that continued the Dulo genus. Khan Kubrat was here and passed through these lands. His son Asparukh went through the Danube and created Bulgaria. Now we are in Europe, but we remember that we came from this place by horse riding.

Hundreds of participants presented an unforgettable festive event for residents and guests of the capital. The bright festival lasted two days and ended with a rich concert program.
